Summary of Project

This homeowner enjoys her clothes, shoes and accessories. We were asked to create a fabulous master closet. We found a 3’ space in the existing master bath rear wall between the vanity and shower and cut in a door way. We attached a 15×15 closet to the rear/south side of the house with vaulted 15’ ceiling.

To insure natural light and a great view of the rear yard creek and natural landscaping we decided to add a Pella French door and transom along with a Juliet style powder coated steel balcony. This gave the homeowner ability to open the doors and get fresh air, as well, as use the natural light in making selections of clothes, shoes and accessories for the day. The homeowner, a retired interior designer, has small scale model rooms to display so we added deep cabinets on each side of the closet.

We added an island with multiple drawers for accessories and travertine counter top to match existing master bath vanities. Cabinets were installed with adjustable shelves to accommodate multiple shoe and hat storage. A beam was added in peak of the vault to install track lights to highlight closet features. We used Owens Corning “Cultured Stone” supplied by Boral for exterior. An added bonus was the outdoor storage we created below the closet with a segmented arch opening as well as access to walk in crawl space storage.

Project accomplishments, significant challenges and creative solutions

This master closet addition would make any “Princess “ecstatically happy as it did our homeowner. We offset the room connection 1 foot off original brick corner to give the addition that “not added on “look. In order to hang the balcony and insure no leaks at attaching points we used ice and water shield under and over the bolted brackets supports for the heavy iron balcony. With this much stacked stone we were challenged with moisture management so we used Benjamin Obdyke “hydrogap” drainable house wrap and tape.
